DAY OF THE DEAD COMING IS COMING UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR CHILD TO BE EXCLUDED FROM THIS LESSON.

Below is a bried description of what is happening in our classroom.

Kindergarden is still working on classroom routines and we almost have it completely set up.  Currently, they are learning numbers 1-10, a few colors, vowel sounds, words that begin with a vowel sound, and a couple of Spanish songs.  Parents, practice with them!  There are many resources online.  I also have a videos tab that could be helpful.

1-3

Our 1-3 graders are reviewing greetings, farewells, courtesy expressions, expanding vocabulary from our weekly book, and now this week we are working on body parts.  Parents, practice with them!  There are many resources online.  I also have a videos tab that could be helpful.

4-5

We are currently building on our family vocabulary and applying it in context through reading and comprehension questions.  Students have been acquiring very well for only 1-2 times a week that I see them. Before the end of the quarter, we will begin building sentences to describe our family.  We are also praciticing how to respond to questions such as:

  1. how old are you?
  2. what's your mother's name?
  3. how many brothers/sisters do you have?
  4. When is your b-day?
  5. What day is it today?
  6. Where are you from       etc..

I REALLY LIKE THIS WEBSITE TO PRACTICE VOCABULARY. http://onlinefreespanish.com/  TRY IT!

6-8

I have set up a H.W assignment section TAB for 6-8 grade.  They have a WEEKLY h.w assignment that involves google voice.  Students are being assesed verbally and the way it works is by calling and leaving a voicemail for me to listen to and grade.  ALL weekly words are due every FRIDAY by MIDNIGHT.  If students turn in assignments during the weekend, they are considered late and there will be a 1pt deduction.  H.W  from the previous week WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and will be marked MISSING IN GRADEBOOK.  This will be strictly followed.  We are surrounded by deadlines everyday and our students need to learn that as well.

Our vocabulary includes 12 COMMANDS, 11 nouns( body parts, classroom items) and 2 adverbs.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As part of the cultural aspect and global awareness of the language, students will be learning about “Día de los muertos” or Day of the Dead from October 16- November 2 during Spanish.   We will be discussing the history, the purpose of the holiday and how it’s celebrated in many Latin American countries.  Below is a website that provides more information on this yearly tradition.            https://www.nationalgeographic.org/media/dia-de-los-muertos/

An “ofrenda” or offering will be placed on the 3rd floor by the Spanish room and you are welcome to stop by and see it (Oct 31- Nov 3).  The “ofrenda” will represent elements necessary for life on Earth, different types of food, and pictures of deceased family members.  If you’d like, please send a picture of a loved one who has passed away OR send a picture of a famous philosopher, singer, actor, astronomer etc. so that it’s placed on the “ofrenda.”

Here is a breakdown for each grade of the art activities that will take place during this cultural lesson. (Some supplies may be requested from the students.)

Many students are excited about this project and I hope that your child is able to participate.  Learning about culture helps us understand other people’s perspectives, patterns of behavior, and contributions to the world at large.  If you are not comfortable with your child participating in this cultural lesson, please send me an email at htorres20@cps.edu with your child’s name and grade.  An alternative assignment will be provided.

Thank you very much!

P.S. Don’t forget to stop by and see the OFRENDA in person.  Last year our OFRENDA was highlighted on channel 66 UNIVISION.  It is the first picture on the webpage below.
